GMO’s=GIGO

GMO’s=GIGO
Garbage in, Garbage Out

I have seen the cars festooned with stickers. GMO’s. People seem to have some strong opinions on them. The letters mean something, but what? GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. It is basically a living thing, plant or animal, that has chemicals created in a laboratory, that do not occur naturally, introduced into them. The main reasons for doing this are the main reasons most businesses exist. We all have to eat, food has to be shipped, and in our economy, cash is used to grant value to something we own or create. They will be made to grow larger, or have more mass than without the added chemicals. . This usually results in the producer of the animal or plant, to be paid more money. They can cover the costs of the chemicals because  the mutation that have been created usually result in higher profit margins when compared to businesses that don’t market GMO’s
Usually the chemical that is to be ingested will be fed to an animal, or injected with a syringe. It is not completely unlike steroids, or PED’s in the athletic world. These are banned like crazy. Lance Armstrong, Ryan Braun, Lyle Alzado. There were athletes at my high school, 25 yrs ago, taking steroids. The effects on steroids are well documented. These are banned, yet creating GMO’s is still widely accepted, or at least overlooked. The chemicals used in processed food are dangerous, and what is worse, is they are relatively new, so information on the effects is still coming in. Here is a web page about a relatively new medical condition that killed 27 people in the United States in the late 1980’s and 1990’s.
It eventually was a situation that called for the involvement of the CDC. Here is a link for FAQ’s about GMO’s.
It is true that these chemicals are in a large percentage of GMO’s on the market. That doesn’t mean they are the only choices when it comes to healthy meat, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. There is of course an electronic solution, This is the age of information. Here is a link to a mobile app that will provide a guide to non GMO shopping.
Are you the type of person who really wants to take sustainability(a great concept, and living philosophy), to the next level? There is nothing wrong with that. Passionate, grassroots movements are traditionally vehicles for change, the lasting kind, for the betterment of humanity, usually. The thinkers, planners, and designers with a keen eye towards the future, and the tools to accurately predict trends, have been tackling these issues for years. The “great recession” which is lasting longer than the Great Depression, has made a lot of us learn how to think outside the box. . creative, coalition based, team oriented collaborative efforts, in business, and also activism, have changed the world forever, already. This is a blog I stumbled upon while doing research.
This blog held the term, “vertical farming”. I had no idea what that meant. An anonymous source helped me make the transition from concept, to application, this way. In order to avoid contaminated crops, some innovators are creating controlled environment growing spaces, including vertical farms. This could serve well in 2 ways. It will increase exponentially the amount of food we can grow, and it will put food production into the hands of the general public. You can grow your OWN food, nearly anywhere, and a great deal of it. Not only are we thinking outside the box, we are going to be stacking the boxes and farming in them! Click the link, watch the video, and it will all make more sense.
These are all just ideas, but with the pervasive fear of GMO’s growing and grassroots efforts over the last few years, communities are banding together to ensure healthy food and a thriving planet for future generations. Right here in Eugene, you can lend a hand if so inclined, or just come down and check out non violent direct action at work. Citizens that want to effect change. Protecting current and future generations. It seems interesting to hear more about this.
